Performance
Diary:
2004
The
Stormy Records show was short and sweet. We sang and danced as we tore
our equipment down, performing as we walked out the door.
- Mac’s
is mac’s, smoke, toilets, plastic. We covered ourselves with plastic
and duct tape in tribute to the war effort. “less than 24 hours
after U.S. Fire Administrator David Paulison described a list of useful
items, stores in the greater Washington, D.C. area reported a surge
in sales of plastic sheeting, duct tape...” CNN report. The stage
was covered with Jucifer’s amps so we played on the dance floor,
a nice integration with the audience which we maximized by walking out
amongst the people with our horns. Overall it was a solid show that
seemed to reveal a promising future.
- March's
show at the Otherwise Gallery was an exercise in exploration (as if
they all aren't), by agreeing to play instruments that were new to us.
Afterwards we were nearly forced to play for our coffee by a very nice
Cuban-Irish woman!
- The
Three and a half little pigs show at dreamland theater was great fun.
Naia, and Jason put on a fine puppet display to kelly’s narration.
The audience sang along with us via the animated score system. We finished
the show with an improvised puppet, and music dance. A very satisfying
show if I say so myself.
- At
Espresso Royal we tried out our flashcards, with cues ranging from salsa
to go nuts. There were some nice moments where we moved from
sound-scapes to dark lounge without catching our breath.
- The
new studio at WHFR is a pleasure to play in. Jon played bass, James
the trap kit, Chris guitar, and Jim clarinet.
- At
Macs we opened for a band of robots, who received enough publicity to
make
them the biggest event in lansing for the night. RWCID alumnus Chuck
came to
make a guest appearance on sampler. Chris got aesthetic criticism from
two
gentlemen in front. Chuck's sampler died. A crowd gathered and resembled
a mob.
Chris' amp died. Jon and James tried to keep the groove. We all nearly
died.
Maybe we've gotten all we can from the Macs experiment?
On the other hand, most of the crowd LOVED it.
- For
the show at the candlestick
maker we used a sort of animated score to organize our time. We
started with solos, punctuated by group vocal pieces, then Jon conducted
us. There were two series of processing during which Chris or Jon manipulated
the acoustic instruments. Then we ran through a series of data related
photographs, and words. When it was over we eat some middle eastern
food, and smoked, we were very tired. Then James drove us back to Lansing
in our shiny new white van, while Deon played Grand Theft Auto. We were
joined for the show by two Chicago musicans Rob Pleshar on tuba, and
Neil Jendon on guitar.
- This
otherwise show was packed, good vibe, good mixture of contributors organized
by joho, of course. We ran through some of the Detroit art space set
up, except chris played guitar instead of laptop.
- Opened
for the mighty TV Pow
with Chris on laptop, Jim on laptop & clarinet, and Jon doing live
loops & re-sampling. The Detroit Art Space is a great spot - very
industrial and loud. At least 3 of the staff were doing sound at some
point; nice when people care.
Our set went off without a hitch, with Chris dropping samples from old
school RWC recordings. Jim did video on his LCD face mask. Three cheers
for WHFR's Scott Boatright for setting it up.
- After
three nights of freeing Iannis Xenakis we finally got it right, standing
room only, crazy video from Future Worker Girl, ancient percussion from
Jason Spoke, mind warping marionettes from the hands of Naia Venturi.
The was rattled by jon, wolf, chris, chuck, scott deRoche, jim, and
misha (of jazz alkalize). High light points were audience conducting
each other but looking like they were puppeteers, wolf showing kids
his Theremin, great audience.
- Four
to the floor, hell yeah, quiet door. Chuck and scott opened, we followed
with jon, chris, jim, wolf, and bryan kay (drums). Cheer accident followed
but most of us went to bed.
- The
show we did at msu’s planetarium was the first of an annual event
(we hope). Deon (diss-asembler) and jim did 3D video, followed by a
circular animated score, they we let it all hang loose. This was an
ambient kind of an evening by intention, jon, chris, and jim produced
processed/clean vocals. Matt borghi processed guitar, wolf on Theremin,
kero making beats.
